World Conference 2026 – Inauguration

Opening Session and Keynote

World Conference 2026 – Inauguration

The 50th FIAT/IFTA World Conference opened on 7 October at the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo, bringing the global media archiving community together under the theme Screen Memories in Dialogue: Learning from Diversity.

The opening session featured welcome addresses from Maria Dora Genis Mourão (General Director at Cinemateca Brasileira), Virginia Bazán Gil (Head of Archives at RTVE and President of FIAT/IFTA), and Marina Moreira (Superintendent of Marketing and Culture at BNDES).

“Be curious rather than comfortable”:

In her address, President Virginia Bazán Gil explained why the Federation chose São Paulo. “Bringing the World Conference to Latin America is a deliberate choice”, she stated. It allows the community to listen to different conversations, discover different professional realities and connect with communities that are not always sufficiently present in its usual discussions.

For FIAT/IFTA, she said, diversity is not simply a matter of counting countries, institutions or professional profiles. It is about what happens when those differences actually enter the conversation. That exchange has to work in both directions: local and regional perspectives can shape how we think about global challenges, while the knowledge and connections of an international network can support initiatives at a local level.

Language is part of the same commitment. Portuguese, Spanish and English will all be heard during the conference, with simultaneous interpretation for some specific sessions, so that participants can contribute in their own languages.

Her invitation to delegates was simple: “Be curious rather than comfortable.” She encouraged attendees to join sessions outside their usual field, to use the coffee breaks to meet someone new, and to have real conversations with sponsors, who bring another valuable perspective to the community.

The opening session was followed by the first keynote, delivered by Michela Giorelli, TV Executive Producer at Vicoforte Media Productions. Drawing on more than thirty years of work across Latin America, she offered a producer’s perspective on the relationship between archives and documentary storytelling.

Finding archival material, she showed, is only the beginning: visibility is not access. Rights, availability, quality, timing and cost all determine whether material can actually return to the screen, and can ultimately shape the story itself.

Her keynote also followed that relationship in the other direction. Every production creates new archival material, such as interviews, rushes, research and unused footage, that needs to remain findable, understandable and usable if it is to become part of tomorrow’s audiovisual memory. It was a powerful reflection on the continuum between producing with archives and producing for the archive: what we film today is someone else’s archive tomorrow.

About the FIAT/IFTA World Conference

The FIAT/IFTA World Conference is a dynamic forum where ideas meet proposals for action, and where the global community gathers to address the most pressing challenges in media preservation and access in an atmosphere of collaboration. This year’s edition is strategically sponsored by BNDES and supported by TV Cultura.

The four-day programme includes presentations, discussion panels, expert roundtables and keynotes, with over 90 speakers joining on-site to share their knowledge of the challenges and opportunities in the archiving sector. A pre-conference day offered workshops on ethical archival challenges, management of sensitive collections, future skills and knowledge-sharing, and a special workshop focused on the Latin American context.
