A recap!

The Preservation & Migration Seminar 2026 took place on 4–5 June at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, Ireland. Co-hosted by FIAT/IFTA in collaboration with RTÉ and the Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI), the event brought together more than 80 professionals from across the audiovisual heritage and digital preservation sectors for the first on-site edition of the PMC Seminars.

Under the theme “Digital Time: Show Me How You Do It! Recipes for Audiovisual Content Longevity”, participants explored current challenges, practical solutions, and emerging strategies for the preservation, migration, and long-term stewardship of digital media content.

Join us as we look back at FIAT/IFTA’s latest seminar and revisit the key discussions, insights, and collaborations that shaped these two inspiring days in Dublin.

The Keynote

To kick off the first day of the seminar, we welcomed Kate Murray, Digital Projects Coordinator at the Library of Congress, for a keynote presentation titled “Working Together to Support Trusted Stewardship of AI-Impacted Content and Workflows.”

The presentation explored the evolving role of digital preservation repositories and information professionals in ensuring the trusted stewardship of content and workflows affected by artificial intelligence (AI).

The Programme

Featuring a range of case studies, in-depth explorations, and panel discussions, the seminar addressed key issues impacting preservation today, including possible roles of AI, media archive eco-impact, content authenticity, cost models, and more.

With speakers from organisations such as INA, BFI, BBC, DRI, and else, this was an opportunity for professional audiovisual archivists to discover strategies for safeguarding content in an era of rapid technological change.

The highlight? Sharing the stage for the panel ‘Future Heritage: Securing the Future of Today’s Digital Cinema’. We tackled a relevant issue: the dangerous myth that professional preservation of digital masters is just an optional cost.
