The deadline to submit your project for the Media Studies Grant is fast approaching: April 19th, 2024.

The 2024 Call for Projects for the Media Studies Grant is now open for applications. The FIAT/IFTA Media Studies Commission is looking to commission small-scale research projects that deal with one or more of the following core themes: audiovisual archives and societal challenges, historiographical contributions to archive-based media research, collaborative practices in archive-based media research and/or regional media histories.

The Media Studies Grant aims to promote archive-based research and ensure the valorization of scientific knowledge for archival practice. Researchers at all levels in their careers, including MA and PhD students, are encouraged to apply.

Requirements
  • Candidates must send their application in PDF format by April 19th, 2024.
  • Applications should be emailed to d.mustata@rug.nl
  • Awarded candidates need to sign a funding agreement with FIAT/IFTA. 
  • Awarded candidates are expected to deliver by the end of their grant period:  
    • A written report of their research at the quality standards of a scholarly article.
    • Additional research output that showcases innovative ways of engaging with (digital) archives. This can be in the form of an audiovisual essay, interactive digital story, creative demo, etc. (depending on the nature of the proposed project). Please ensure no copyright restrictions exist for the archival material you may want to reuse in this output type.  
  • All output needs to mention the support of FIAT/IFTA and should be made available to FIAT/IFTA. In addition, successful candidates must present their research results at the FIAT/IFTA World Conference in Bucharest, Romania, on  October 15th-18th, 2024.
  • Candidates may be asked for promotional interviews and/or to share their research progress during an online session.
  • FIAT/IFTA reserves the right to make the output of funded studies accessible on its website.
  • Proposed studies can be part of a bigger project (e.g. master thesis, PhD dissertation, book project, etc.) or stand-alone research initiatives the candidate wishes to pursue.
