Recordings Vol.4: Exploring Global Perspectives in Audiovisual Archives
At the FIAT/IFTA World Conference 2023 in Locarno, two key interviews showcased the intercultural exchange and innovative approaches in archival practices. The event brought together experts from around the world, fostering a platform where knowledge, technology, and unique perspectives on cultural heritage were shared.
Yi Wang – Shanghai Audio-Visual Archives of SMG
Yi Wang discussed how the FIAT/IFTA conference provides a global platform to elevate the capabilities of their archives. With advancements in AI cataloguing, Wang emphasized the reduced need for manual labour, allowing archives to be used more effectively. The enhanced use of video material not only helps preserve history but also supports educational institutions in China by providing valuable resources for academic lessons. Wang expressed enthusiasm about learning from other countries and applying these insights to maximize the potential of their own audiovisual archives.
Excited about the upcoming FIAT/IFTA 2024 conference? Yi Wang’s insights can also be linked to this year’s session on “Exploring the Use and Value of Real Historical Images in Film and Television Dramas”, taking place at FIAT/IFTA 2024.
Murielle Sandra Tiako Djomatchoua – Princeton University
Murielle Tiako Djomatchoua, a participant in the FRAME Mentoring Programme, shared her experience working with the National Audiovisual Institute in France. Initially focused on an African exhibition and the circulation of objects in French media, her research evolved into a more profound exploration of how African heritage in the arts is portrayed through a colonial lens. She highlighted how the mentoring programme granted her access to archival material that would have otherwise been inaccessible, enriching her interdisciplinary approach to cultural heritage.
For those eager for the 2024 conference, be sure to check out the upcoming FRAME Mentoring session to meet the new mentees and discover their archival projects.
Both interviews underscore the intercultural richness of the FIAT/IFTA conference, where diverse voices and new technologies merge to unlock the full potential of global audiovisual archives. Attendees can expect more cross-cultural dialogue and cutting-edge discussions at the 2024 conference!
