Media Studies Grant 2023

Deadline approaching!

MSC-Grant-2023

We are one week away from the Media Studies Grant: Call for Projects deadline.

Don’t forget to submit your project before Monday, April 3rd!

In 2023, FIAT/IFTA’s Media Studies Commission is looking to commission small-scale research projects that help us understand audiovisual archives in the context of current societal challenges. We are particularly interested in archive-based research on sustainability, environmentalism, postcolonialism and digitalisation practices. Projects outside these thematic areas of focus, which address other urgent issues related to audiovisual archives and/or propose innovative research into specific archival collections, are welcome.

Requirements
  • Candidates must send their application in PDF format by April 3rd.
  • Applications should be emailed to: d.mustata@rug.nl
  • Awarded candidates need to sign a funding agreement with FIAT/IFTA.
  • Awarded candidates are expected to deliver by the end of their grant period:
    • A written report of their research at the quality standards of a scholarly article.
    • Additional research output that showcases innovative ways of engaging with (digital) archives. This can be in the form of an audiovisual essay, interactive digital story, creative demo, etc. (depending on the nature of the proposed project). Please ensure there are no copyright restrictions for the archival material you may want to reuse in this output type.
  • All output needs to mention the support of FIAT/IFTA and should be made available to FIAT/IFTA. In addition, successful candidates must present their research results at the FIAT/IFTA World Conference in Locarno, Switzerland, on 17-20 October 2023.
  • Candidates may be asked for promotional interviews and/or to share their research progress during an online session.
  • FIAT/IFTA reserves the right to make accessible the output of funded studies on its website.
  • Proposed studies can be part of a bigger project (e.g. master thesis, PhD dissertation, book project, etc.) or stand-alone research initiatives the candidate wishes to pursue.
