Crime levels in Croatia are generally rather low. Pickpockets are active in the touristic areas (theft of documents, purses etc.). Violent crime is very rare while police presence is not highly visible, even in popular tourist areas. However, caution and common sense should always be used by any visitor to any city and Dubrovnik is no exception. It is advisable to keep your important belongings in secure pockets and bags, and be aware of your surroundings at all times, particularly in heavily crowded areas.

If you plan to take the opportunity of your participation to the FIAT/IFTA conference to also visit the Croatian hinterland, it’s important to note that since the end of the Yugoslavian civil war in 1996 some remote areas are not completely free of landmines and unexploded ammunition. Hikers are advised to stay on the roads or paths and not to walk in fields, canals or verges where warning signs indicate the presence of mines. From a health perspective, tap water is perfectly safe to drink, though many people prefer the taste of bottled water which is very widely available both in shops and in all restaurants and cafes. Pharmacies (‘Ljekarna’) have a green cross above the door. A few are open on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays. The city’s General Hospital (Medarevo) provides (paid) emergency treatment for tourists. EU citizens can obtain a consultation from any doctor, but should carry their European Health Insurance Card.
