Question 21.

Will you be creating low quality proxies and storyboards during the digitalization of the media to be preserved ? Will you be using DVD, CD-ROM or Hard Disks to store these proxies and storyboards ?

ANTENA 3

  • Yes. Hard disks

BBC

  • Yes. For 8 years we have been making MPEG I (at 1.4 M b/s) on CD. We have done trial projects making keyframes, and plan to introduce keyframe extraction into preservation work, with the keyframes stored on hard disks (with datatape backup)

BNT

  • There is not a final resolution. Some hesitation exists whether to use tapes or discs. The strategy is not yet completed.

CBC - BARBADOS

CBC / SRC

  • Probably proxies on hard disks, but the final choice has not been made yet

CBSNEWS

CPRDP- PUERTO RICO

  • Yes, Hard Disks

CT - CZECH TELEVISION

  • Yes, by means of server technology

DR - DANMARKS RADIO

  • There will be made proxies and key frames/storyboards during the digitalization, and these will be stored on servers.

DUNA TELEVISION

  • Yes, to Hard Disk Array

ERTT

  • Not yet.

ETB

  • Yes, we think that is important, surely on hard disks.

GLOBO TV

  • We plan to keep just low resolution proxies. During a period of time, these proxies will be held on hard disks. After that, they will be moved to DVD libraries

INA

  • Low quality (viewing format) : see question 20
  • Story boards are made when digitised documents are reconsidered to constitute theme based corpuses.

KBS

  • We plan to create WMV (windows media video), MPEG-1 digital video and thumbnail images for use in searching, browsing and EDL editing. We plan to preserve these files in a disk array system in order to allow for real time searching and browsing

NAA

  • Not yet decided

NBC

  • Most likely. Under review. Hard Disks and/or data tape has been discussed.

NHK

  • Partly yes, partly no.We must decide each to be preserved or not, because of its cost. In case of preserving, we are using Hard Disks.

ORF

  • Most likely but not decided yet (digital newsroom:yes, keyframes on HD-storage)

RAI

  • We use Hard Disk and data tape to store low quality assets.

RTBF

RTSI

  • Yes, first DVD, then Hard Disk

SCREENSOUND AUSTRALIA

  • Video browsing copies on MPEG-1 at 1.5 to 2 Mb/s, and JPEG keyframes or thumbnails
  • Audio browsing on MPEG-1 layer 3 at 128 kb/s
  • Later plans are for MPEG-4 and streaming

SF DRS

  • Not yet decided, but in any case we will create key frames and Low Resolution copies for preview at the journalists workstations

SVT

  • Hard discs and data tapes

SWR

  • During digitizing of items, low- as well as high-bandwidth copies in Mpeg 4 and Mpeg 2 and keyframes (jpg) are created. The storage system comprises a hard disk based online storage area and a digital library tape solution for nearline storage. DVD or CDROM are no appropriate formats for long-term preservation, but probably they are suitable for additional on-demand play-out.

TROS

TRT

  • Low resolution copies of the material will be produced during digitalization and it will be stored on Hard Disks.

TV4 - SWEDEN

  • Proxies have been stored on discs since almost two years. Only low resolution Real video

TV CATALUNYA

  • We have a system similar to Virage to extract key-frames. The key-frames are preserved in the data-base in Hard disks. A low quality copy of the video itself in MPEG-1 is preserved also in hard disk.

TVM - TELEVISION DE MAURITANIE

  • No

YLE

  • Yes, those are just the proxy/storyboard formats we have been talking about.
