Question 20.
How does your company plan to preserve the content ? Will you be
copying it to data tape or to a digital videotape format ?
ANTENA 3
- Probably to digital videotape format. Decision not taken
yet
BBC
- The BBC is investing 100 million Euros over a decade, on a
whole range of preservation projects covering all media. At
present we are not making data tape, though for U-Matic
preservation we are making MPEG II on DVD, which is a similar
approach to making data tape. But we are also making DVC-PRO, so
we are operating a mixed economy of videotape and data
formats.
BNT
CBC - BARBADOS
CBC / SRC
- At this point we have transfered our old formats on both
BetaSP and Digibeta (2 copies). The new material we acquire is
mostly BetaSP, Digibeta and SX
CBS NEWS
CPRDP- PUERTO RICO
- Digital videotape format and servers
CT- CZECH TELEVISION
DR - DANMARKS RADIO
- We do not plan to copy the material to external formats. We
would like to store the content on data tapes and secure by
mirroring.
DUNA TELEVISION
- We plan to copy the content to data tape in the near
future
ERTT
- We are already in digital tape format.
ETB
- We are planning to preserve the content in data tapes when
possible.
GLOBO TV
INA
- Film material, 2" & 1" tapes : content transfered to
digibeta (preservation format), and encoded in Mpeg 1 (viewing
format) & Mpeg 2 (exploitation format for reuse of extracts
for production)
- ¾" and ½" tapes directly encoded in Mpeg 1 &
2
KBS
- We have been converting existing films, U-matic and Helical
tapes to digital betacam format. However in order for true digital
broadcasting, we need to convert all video tapes to digital tape
format using MPEG-2 (50Mbp/s) and compile them into a huge Storage
Tek library.
NAA
- Video = Digital videotape (DIGI Beta)
- Selection of the audio content = data disks(cd-r) & data
tape
NBC
- Topic currently under review
NHK
- We are managing our huge of contents by our new archives
system. We have almost finished digitalization of Film and analog
tapes.
ORF
- Not decided yet (digital newsroom : IMX)
RAI
- We use data tape and digital video tape both.
RTBF
RTSI
SCREENSOUND AUSTRALIA
- Video : Uncompressed probably as MXF, parallel Digital
Betacam.
SF DRS
- At the moment it is copies to IMX and Digital Betacam
SVT
SWR
- That will be done in a step by step process. As recently new
digital tape standards for production (Panasonic DVCPRO) and
long-term archiving (Sony IMX) have been adopted, tape formats are
pre-eminently used for archiving. But re-development of the
archive database system will be combined with an implementation of
low-bandwidth preview but also high-bandwidth broadcast storage
systems. That could be used as a nucleus for a future digital
archiving system.
TROS
TRT
- The content will be copied to Data Tape Library.
TV4 - SWEDEN
- No final decision made yet.
TV CATALUNYA
- We plan copying it to data tape
TVM - TELEVISION DE MAURITANIE

support numérique
YLE
- We start copying legacy archive material to Digital Betacam
videotape and move over to a data tape format when
appropriate.
