2. What is its area of activity? (free over the air TV broadcaster, cable TV channel, independent content producer, etc...)

  • Public Broadcaster

3. Type of production media format currently being used? (tape, which format?)

  • Betacam SP ve Digital Betacam

4. What media formats has your company used and what formats are currently held in your archives? Approximate quantity?

  • By the end of 2002, the current situation in TRT Archives (appr.) is about 110.000 hrs consisting of mainly 1” , Betacam SP, DigiBeta and film materials.

5. Are you or your company/organization currently working on any MAM initiative (either studies or actual implementation)?

  • Yes, TRT is currently working on a project called TRT-SAS (TRT-Digital Archive System)

6. Who is/was leading the study for a MAM implementation (IT Department, Engineering Department, Library Department, other?…)? Has your company established a “group” to analyze MAM? If so, who is in the group? And, how long has the group been exploring MAM.

  • 3 departments are working on this project for 1 year. : Broadcast Archives Department, IT Department, Studio Planning Department
  • Yes, there is a group consisting 10 people coming from these departments.

7. How long has your company/will your company's media asset management implementation program been in existence?

  • It will take about 6 months to launch this system and it will take 2 years to be used efficiently.

8. Have you used, or are you using, internal resources or external consults (or company which provides consulting services) to formulate a MAM strategy? Why did you decided to use the consults?

  • No. All the works are carried by TRT.

9. What roll-out plan will/did your company adopt in implementing a MAM solution? Will/Did you implement MAM it in phases, all at once?

  • It will be implemented in phases.

10. Will/Did you start your MAM strategy from the archives and march up to content creation, or will/did you start from content creation and work your way back to the archives? Which is, for you, the best option and why?

  • It will first start from archives. Both. For the legacy archives we will proceed the first way and for the current programs the latter option.

11. Based on your studies thus far, what are the main benefits for your company/organization to implement a MAM solution? (long term content preservation, program production, play out cache, etc.)

  • In the scope of TRT-SAS Project, the following points are intended to be achieved :
    • Long term content preservation
    • Efficient and effective usage of the archives: lowered program production costs.
    • With the internet options (which will be implemented in the future) everybody will be able to search TRT archives. This will increase productivity and increase income to TRT.
    • Centralize management of spread archive material kept in various places and formats
    • Providing reliability, immediate access and standardization of operations in the archive
    • Allowing authorized users to search, query and make EDL via intranet and internet from their desktop computers
    • Integration with the digital archives all over the world, thus reducing transfer costs, search time, reduced beurocracy between companies, etc.

12. What are the obstacles/challenges that must be overcome in order to implement a MAM solution (cultural change, cost, ROI, retraining etc…)?

  • Fast technology change, people’s habits to use old archives, cost, etc.

13. Are/Did you considering buying the MAM solution as a closed package or do/did you co-develop it with a vendor? Are/Did you consider developing an in-house MAM system? Please explain?

  • We prefer buying the MAM solution and making modifications to adopt our system with the vendor we purchased from.

14. Do you think that the various MAM players today on the market clearly understand your requirements?

  • Actually we made many meetings with the vendors and prepared reports to clarify our requirements to the MAM players. But of course we also get some ideas from them, interactively.

15. Is there a feature that you feel is important to your business and that few or none of the various MAM vendors is currently addressing? What is it?

  • Watermarking and recognition processes (eg. speech to text conversion, face recognition) are not implemented yet by the vendors in a standart way.

16. Have you visited any MAM installation which impressed you favorably ? Where? Why?

  • We did not visit any MAM installation. No, we did not visit.

17. Are you partnering with any company (ies) to implement a media asset management system? Please explain the role of each company.

  • We are examining the proposals nowadays. There is not a partnership yet.

18. Please explain why you selected companies to partner with? (Local presence and support? Cost? Suite of features available?...)

  • We did not select yet, but we prefer support, low cost, reliability, Cost, Suite of features available are all factors to our decision.

19. Did you standardize the metadata within your company? Are you following the standards of a specific body (SMPTE, EBU, ...)?

  • We already standardized Genre schema (Content type, programme format, intended audience, etc.) within TRT depending on the TV Anytime and EBU Escort list. Curently we are working for the general Metadata schema of the archive system, complient with the international standards like SMPTE, P-META.

20. How does your company plan to preserve the content? Will you be copying it to data tape or to a digital videotape format?

  • The content will be copied to Data Tape Library.

21. Will you be creating low quality proxies and storyboards during the digitalization of the media to be preserved? Will you be using DVD, CD-ROM or Hard Disks to store these proxies and storyboards?

  • Low resolution copies of the material will be produced during digitalization and it will be stored on Hard Disks.

22. What will you do to the original videotape once it has been copied to the new digital medium?

  • The original videotape is also kept on the shelf as it is.

23. What level/type of compression is considered adequate so as to be used to archive material?

  • We prefer MPEG 2 4:2:2 50 Mbps type, lossless compression for the original archive and MPEG 1 type compression for the preview copies.

24. What is the timeframe for completing the cataloguing of the material? (i.e. 20K hours in 6 months, 100K hours in 12 months, 250K hours in 2 years. etc)

  • It is planned 10K hours in two years time.

25. Which content stays on-line (in a robot) and which one is stored in a shelf?

  • It will be sorted by a committee depending on the rights business and level of usage by the other pople .

26. What type of media is going to be used for permanent storage (i.e. data tape, DVD, Video Tape, etc…)?

  • It will be Data Tape Library

27. What type of video compression is going to be used for HQ assets. The same as the production servers? Higher compression ratios?

  • HQ assets will be compressed to 50 Mbps (about 3.3:1).

28. What type of video compression is going to be used for low resolution proxies (MPEG-1, MPEG-4, etc…)?

  • MPEG-1

29. What kind of back-up policies (mirroring, etc..)?

  • There is no back-up for high resolution copies
  • And low resolution copies will be backed up periodically.

30. Will repurposed material also become part of the archive?

  • Yes, it will.
