The conference officially opened in the morning with a welcoming message from our local hosts – Director of RAI Teche Maria Pia Ammirati, Venice municipality representative Ermelinda Damiano, FIAT/IFTA President Bríd Dooley and a keynote speech from Ana Luiza Massot Thompson-Flores, Director of UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, underlying the value of audiovisual collections in the context of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and the responsibility that lies in the hands of archives to provide access to archival material.
The morning session concluded with the FIAT/IFTA General Assembly during which the FIAT/IFTA President informed members about the key actions of the association undertaken in the past 2 years. The work overview was followed by elections of a new President and six new members of the Executive Council. Bríd Dooley (RTE) was reelected for her second term of office as the President and Brecht Declercq (VIAA), Herbert Hayduck (ORF), Eva-Lis Green (KB), Tom De Smet (B&G), Virginia Bazán Gil (RTVE) and Delphine Wibaux (INA) were appointed to the Executive Council. As the community we wish to express our sincere congratulations to the elected FIAT/IFTA members. At the same time we express our gratitude to Blago Markota (HRT) and Jean-Gabriel Minel (Ina) stepping down this year from the EC. A special thank you goes to Daniel Teruggi, the current FIAT/IFTA Treasurer passing the baton as well.

The afternoon was dedicated to parallel sessions. A ‘super session’ focusing on artificial intelligence and feature extraction raised some important questions about whether to get or not to get involved in AIt. The latter not really being seen as a valid option for the future. The session showcased some innovative examples of access option using results of automatic technics. Simultaneously, sessions about marketing and audience research, publishing broadcast archives, technical and content related choices in preservation and digitisation and digital rights management took place providing insight and stimulating vivid discussions among the conference participants.
We spent the evening at the marvellous Casinò di Venezia where we enjoyed the Welcome Cocktails and were given yet another opportunity to chat… and gamble in the exquisite venue being one of the biggest symbols of Venetian Renaissance architecture.
