The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision organises a Winter School on audiovisual preservation in Hilversum (NL) next week. For the event, three guest speakers were invited to talk about their experiences with implementing preservation policies in their organisations: Raelene Casey from the Irish Film Archive, David Rowntree from the United Nations Mechanism of Criminal Tribunals, and Gema Grueso Otalo from the Museo Reina Sofia.
PrestoCentre will live-stream these talks from the Winter School in Webinar form, on February 17, 18 and 19. We kindly invite you to join us for these Winter School webinars. They offer the opportunity to gain inside knowledge on how these organisations approach the preservation challenges for their audiovisual collections. After the talks, the live audience from the Winter School as well as the webinar participants will be able to join the Q&A session.

Raelene Casey (February 17, 3.45pm – 4.45pm CET)
Raelene Casey (Digital Collections and Access Manager at the Irish Film Archive) will talk about the process their organisation went through to develop and put on paper its preservation plans. The Film Archive published its new Digital Preservation & Access Strategy, which outlines its response to the challenges and opportunities of archiving vast quantities of moving image material in a digital environment, in June 2015. This crucial document was the result of several years of intensive research by the Archive team and outlines a long-term plan as well as a set of guiding principles, flexibility, scalability and sustainability, to assist the organisation in preserving and providing access to Ireland’s digital moving image material.
David Rowntree (February 18, 3.45pm – 4.45pm CET)
David Rowntree (United Nations Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals) will focus on the audiovisual preservation efforts at the Tribunal within the larger context of an institution that is transitioning from an active operating court to an archive. He will speak about the digital preservation system that has recently been acquired (early stages of implementation), the requirements for the system, and the special considerations (both technical and legal) inherent in its audiovisual judicial recordings.
Gema Grueso Otalo (February 19, 10.45am – 11.45am CET)
Gema Grueso Otalo (conservation and restoration specialist at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía) will be talking about how the conservation-restoration department of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is tackling the preservation of the heterogeneous audiovisual artworks in the museum collection, taking advantage of the resources at hand within the different departments of the institution.
