DOCUMENTATION COMMISSION

The Documentation Commission met in London, 19 January 1997, to discuss the 1997 Conference programme and other matters.

It seems that there are quite a few projects going on that relate to the documentation side of archives. Most of these are part of the ongoing trend towards the digitisation of archives, be it moving images, stills or documents. Many projects work towards a close integration of the archive material and the documentation. The DC will try to ensure that some of these projects are presented during the FIAT/IFTA Conference in September. The DC expressed a wish that EUROMEDIA should be one of the projects on the programme.

In conjunction with the above Gůsta Johansson will put together an e-mail enquiry to FIAT/IFTA members asking for information on multimedia projects that they are involved in and that they would wish to have mentioned or introduced. So, if you read this before you get the e-mail, send a message to gosta@msn.com

The future work of the DC was discussed. One suggestion made was that the Commission should run an annual seminar on archival documentation. This should be fairly small and informal. One idea for a seminar could be teleworking - those of you who attended the DC open meeting at the Paris Conference last year will remember the presentation by Agneta Forsstrům, SVT. Eva-Lis Green and Peter Cox will also devise a questionnaire on documentation projects that will go out to all members.

MULTIMEDIA PROJECTS ENQUIRY

The FIAT/IFTA Documentation Commission is interested in information on projects concerning the documentation of multimedia archives. Many archives are now responsible for, or will soon be responsible for more than one type of material, including film, TV material, stills, radio material, documents etc. In order for such archives to work efficiently new ways of documentation have to be developed. The Documentation Commission is especially interested in new projects relating to this issue.

The Commission is hoping to gather enough information to be able to give an overview of this area at the FIAT/IFTA Conference in Budapest, 6-11 September. If you have information on such projects, or if you have any questions, please contact either Annemieke de Jong, Chair of the Documentation Commission, or Eva-Lis Green, Co-Chair of the Documentation Commission.
